The Impact of Climate Change on Cities in Cameroon


The impact of climate change on cities in Cameroon, particularly Douala and Yaoundé, has become increasingly evident in recent years (Bang, N, H., 2022). These cities, experiencing high rates of economic, demographic, and urban growth, are now facing the challenges posed by climate change-induced increases in temperature. The occurrence of extreme weather events, such as strong rainfall leading to flooding, has become a recurrent problem in many cities across the country. According to research conducted by Christenson et al., Douala is both the most industrialized city in central Africa and the city most affected by climate change in Cameroon (Nematchoua, K, M. et al., 2015).

Furthermore, the ongoing Anglophone crisis in Cameroon has also led to population changes in certain regions, such as the Northwest and Southwest regions (Monono, E. and Zinyemba, P, T., 2023). The economic and political marginalization of the Anglophone minority group in Cameroon has escalated this crisis, affecting the population dynamics in these regions .

The combined impact of climate change and the ongoing crisis has created a complex socio-economic landscape in Cameroon. These changes have not only affected the environment and infrastructure but have also had consequences for the people living in these cities. These economic changes in Cameroon have had far-reaching effects, not only on the cities themselves but also on the livelihoods of its residents. Therefore, it is crucial for policymakers and stakeholders to address both the immediate and long-term challenges posed by climate change and the socio-economic changes.
