Cameroon hikes the cost of fuel

The price of a liter of Super has increased from 730 XAF (about 1.21 U.S. dollars) to 840 XAF (about 1.39 U.S. dollars), according to a statement made by Seraphin Magloire Fouda, Secretary General at the Prime Minister's Office. The price of a liter of gasoline has also increased from 720 XAF (about 1.19 U.S. dollars) to 828 XAF (about 1.37 U.S. dollars).

In a statement released on Friday night, Fouda stated that the price rise was "caused by the need to absorb the state's growing budgetary constraints and to avoid tensions in the nation's petroleum product supply."

Officials have announced that in addition to the price increases, "certain" taxes and customs fees in the road transport industry will be lowered, and civil servants' base pay will increase by 5%.

"The government is counting on the understanding, sense of responsibility, and civic-mindedness of consumers for the implementation of these measures," said the press release.

The most recent retail price increases, according to officials, were unavoidable to lessen the financial load on state-run distribution firms.
